City of
Berkeley 8888 Uprising SILVER JUBILEE Burma Day Flag Raising
To honor the people of Burma and marking the
25th Anniversary
of 8888
Friday, August 2nd, 2013
Time: 7:30 am - 9 am (Flags to be raised at
8:08 am)
The city of Berkeley and San
Francisco declared August 8 as Annual Burma Day in 2008 to honor the people of
Burma in their struggle for democracy and freedom. That is the day -- famously
known as 8888 -- the people of Burma took to the street in 1988 to demand
democracy and freedom, but met with brutal crack down by the military regime. In
marking the Burma Day, the City of Berkeley annually raises Burma flags at the
City Hall. This year again the city will be raising the
Burma flags on the August 2nd morning to mark the Burma Day on the 25th
anniversary of 8888. Read More

Since last year, the U.S. has been warming up its
relationship with Burma and lifting the sanctions in recognition of
the ongoing reforms. President Obama paid a historic visit to the
country last November. However, there are serious challenges and
concerns as the military and their cronies are still firmly in
control of the country's political and economic power while many
forms of abuse continues. An election is scheduled to be held in
2015, but no one is sure what would be the likely outcome. Come
share the expert's opinions on where the current reforms are going
and what you can do to help while enjoying authentic Burmese food
and Cultural performances. Also meet and connect with activists,
Burma supporters and tabling NGOs related to Burma.
The event would feature speakers, a documentary
film with producer/co-director; cultural dances; and authentic
Burmese dinner. Discount tickets: tickets are available online and
student, members and group discount available.

There has been some
progress in terms of reform, and in response the United
Sates has removed its sanctions against Burma. We are
hopeful that more progress will follow to ease the great
long suffering of the people for five decades. However,
protests against the power outrages (photo above, story
below) is spreading across Burma as we speak. Burma is
currently the largest exporter of natural gas in the region.
So, where the gas go? People of Burma knows all too well now
what the multinational like Chevron could do to them --
stripping of their valuable national resources while helping
increase their misery and suffering.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi Won Landslide
Victory in Burma's by-election
According to Aung San Suu Kyi's aides, the
National League for Democracy won 43 of
the 44 constituencies it contested and appears set to win the
remaining one too.
The United States and European Union will now be watching closely to
see how the president and his military backers react to the NLD
victory.
The victory is now expected to
accelerate moves to lift sanctions against Burma – the European
Union will decide later this month – but concerns are growing that
it may also leave President Thein Sein's reform vulnerable to
challenge from hardliners within the country's military
establishment.
In her speech to supporters, Aung San Suu
Kyi said she hoped it would usher in a "genuine democratic
atmosphere" and speed the process of national of "national
reconciliation." "It is not so much our triumph as a triumph for the
people who have decided they must be involved in the political
process of this country. It's not so important how many seats [we
won], though we are gratified that we've won so many, but the fact
that the people are so enthusiastic about participating in the
democratic process," she said.
