BADA Petition: The United Nations is Failing Burma!
For presentation to the Consuls General at the respective San Francisco consulates of China, India, Russia and Singapore.

Burma is ruled by one of the most brutal military dictatorships in the world.  Last month Buddhist monks and nuns took to the streets, chanting prayers in a call for human rights. As these peaceful protests spread, the Burmese military cracked down and shot, beat, arrested, imprisoned, disappeared and killed protestors.  The military continues its night time raids, rounding up monks, activists, and anyone suspected of having supported the marches and is sending them to prison where they will likely be tortured, have no trial, and remain in jail in inhuman conditions for many years. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/the-UN-is-failing-Burma

BURMA RIVERS NETWORK: PETITION TO CHINA TO HALT HYDROPWER INVESTMENTS IN BURMA
As you all know that in Burma, China-owned corporations are rapidly raising their investment in energy sector, particularly in hydropower development projects. Indeed, those investments are not environmentally friendly, ecologically unsustainable, and the benefits would definitely flow to military regime's pocket. Moreover, there would be dramatic negative impacts to environment, society and economy of the community, where large dams are going to be built. http://www.salweenwatch.org/take_action.html

[SAMPLE LETTERS]

Dear Senior General Than Shwe,

I am joining with citizens from around the world to appeal for the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest since May 2003.

She has now spent a total of over 11 years under arrest yet she has committed no crime. She has been imprisoned for peacefully calling for democratic reform in Burma. She has the respect and support of people across Burma and throughout the world for her peaceful resistance in the face of oppression.

For many years now the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) has said that it is committed to bringing democracy to Burma. However, while Aung San Suu Kyi and so many other political prisoners remain in detention, claims that Burma is moving towards democracy lack all credibility.

I urge you to demonstrate Burma's stated commitment to democracy by immediately releasing Aung San Suu Kyi and all of Burma's political prisoners. There can be no progress in Burma while Aung San Suu Kyi is not free.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.

China Must Support People of Burma, Not the Military Regime

Hon. Mr. Hu Jintao, President
Hon. Mr. Wen Jiabao, Prime Minister
Hon. Mr. Tan Jiaxuan, State Councilor
Hon. Mr. Yang Jiechi, Foreign Minister
Government of the People's Republic of China

Hundred of thousands of people, under the leadership of Buddhist monks, have joined in national peaceful demonstrations inside Burma, demanding a government that respects the will of the people. We urge you to use your important and influential position to compel the Burmese military regime towards an inclusive and representative national reconciliation process under the guidance of the UN Special Envoy for Myanmar Ibrahim Gambari.

The problems in Burma go beyond more than just the protests over the past month; for decades the military regime has perpetuated a steady strangulation of the country. As a result the military regime's economic mismanagement, poor governance and suppression of the people, Burma has become a vestige of poverty and disease. Moreover, the regime has maintained a brutal campaign against ethnic minorities, destroying over 3,000 villages, forcing millions from their homes, and conscripting more child soldiers than any country in the world.

Global attention is focused heavily on Burma right now, and we support voices from the UN, ASEAN, world leaders, musicians, actors, and countless others who have spoken out for the release of the world's only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Aung San Suu Kyi as well as the release of the thousands of others political prisoners.

In recognition of China's unequivocal leverage with Burma's military regime, we urge you to respect the wishes of the people of Burma and:

 1) Support UN, ASEAN and high level diplomatic efforts by immediately calling for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners, as well as an urgent end to attacks against ethnic minority civilians.

2) Compel the Burmese military regime to engage in dialogue of national reconciliation with Aung San Suu Kyi and other members of the opposition parties and ethnic minority leaders.

3) Publicly support action at the United Nations Security Council by no longer vetoing peaceful UN Security Council resolutions on Burma.

China's Olympic slogan is One World, One Dream, and we ask you to please use your position to help the people of Burma transition from a government which forces them into poverty, disease and death to one that is representative of one Burma, with their dream realized. A Burma that embraces national reconciliation will benefit China and the entire region.
