Greetings,

 

Normally I send you emails about upcoming winemaker dinners and other events at the restaurant. This time, I would like to extend an invitation for an event to benefit a cause I believe very strongly in. Bear with me, the juicy details are at the end of this email.

As some of you may be aware, there has been recent political unrest in Burma (Myanmar). Burma has been ruled by a brutal military dictatorship since a coup d'etat in 1962. Since then, the most basic human rights have been denied to the people of Burma. Burma is a beautiful country, with great, peaceful people.

 

A bit of recent and brief history- in 1990 to quell growing discontent, the government held democratic elections, figuring that they would win a majority of the votes. They were wrong.

 

The National League for Democracy, led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi won 392 out of the 489 seats. The result was invalidated and the government became even more brutal. She is the only Nobel Laureate currently in custody.

 

Recently there have been pro-democracy protests in Burma, the first in over ten years. The government responded with a brutal crackdown.

 

Unfortunately, the Generals who are in power are getting richer, and the people are suffering.

We are sponsoring a fundraiser dinner to benefit the Burmese-American Woman's Alliance (BAWA), a 501.c.3 organization. They provide support to the democracy effort in Burma as well as the refugee crisis along the border.

 

The dinner will be on Wednesday December 5^th, 2007 at 6:30 PM. I will prepare a very special four course dinner accompanied by some wonderful wines.

 

The cost for this dinner is $120 per person, payable directly to BAWA.

 

If you can't make it to the dinner, you can send a check payable to "BAWA" in any amount to my attention at Sent Sovi and I will forward it to BAWA.

 

I know you get many solicitations this time of the year for charitable donations, I appreciate your consideration of this one, it will be a fun time and support a good cause.
